Special Projects

There has been much on the HCVB radar as the bureau works to maintain its current programs while looking for ways to expand its reach, but no item to date has been as large as the important Ricks Centre project.

HCVB, which owns the former Village Theatre in downtown Greenfield, worked with the Hancock County Arts and Cultural Council and Greenfield Parks and Recreation Department on one of the most exciting projects in recent memory – restoring this vintage 1946 Art Deco theatre to its original appearance and renovating it into a new facility for the visual, literary and performing arts. A facility that we believe is destined to enhance local quality of life issues while generating a destination for many new visitors to the community.

Construction on this exciting community/cultural project was completed in Sept. 2006.

On Sept. 19, 2006, the new HJ Ricks Center for the Arts, 122 W. Main St., reopened. In the wake of a nearly $1 million project, the Bureau is still seeking additional funds to retire the loan necessary to complete this key project. Many generous donors have already stepped forward but donations and other contributions from private, corporate, and philanthropic citizens and groups are needed to generate the
balance.

Many events, including concerts, theatre productions, recitals, debates, dance productions and much more, have already been hosted at the Centre and a complete schedule of upcoming events is available by clicking the Ricks Centre link or by calling 317-477-SHOW.

The Ricks Centre is a key in local efforts to help make Hancock County a destination that can attract visitors and enhance their Hancock County experience. The theatre will seat 386 regular seats plus 4 seating areas for the handicapped. It includes gallery and display spaces, new restrooms, new offices and an enlarged stage area where performances and presentations of all kinds have already been offered.

The new Ricks Centre features: Updated restrooms, brought up to ADA requirements from their inadequate 1946 designs; New office spaces that house the HCVB operations, providing tourism and other information to visitors; Gallery areas where visitors could experience artistic, cultural and interpretive displays to enhance their understanding of this community, its history and its role in the Historic National Road’s development; Presentations of cultural and artistic programs that serve as attractions to lengthen and enhance visitors’ enjoyment of our community; Preservation of a valuable piece of Greenfield’s history and improvement of the area’s aesthetic through restoration of the theatre’s façade; and its position as a catalyst for additional economic revitalization.

HCVB is thrilled to have brought such a project to reality as a benefit to the local community and to the increased number of visitors it is expected to attract to Hancock County, Indiana – The Heart of the Crossroads.
